Frustrated with slow Wi-Fi speed, constant buffering, or laggy connections on your phone and laptop? In many cases, the fix is simple—switch your router to use the 5GHz Wi-Fi band. Compared with 2.4GHz, 5GHz offers faster speeds and lower latency, making it ideal for streaming, gaming, or households with multiple devices online at the same time. In this guide, I’ll show you step by step how to enable 5GHz Wi-Fi on your router—it’s easier than you might think.

Check if Your Router Supports 5G Network

Before we dive in, make sure your router actually supports 5GHz. Most dual-band routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and you’ll usually see “Dual Band” or “5GHz” printed on the router label or in the manual.

If your router only supports 2.4GHz, you won’t be able to enable 5GHz Wi-Fi. In that case, you’ll need to upgrade to a dual-band router.

Router Login & Set Up 5G Network

Here’s the part you’re waiting for—switching your router to 5GHz. You’ll need to log in to your router’s admin panel, adjust the Wi-Fi settings, and enable the 5GHz band. Here’s how:

Step 1: Connect to your router’s network

Use your phone, tablet, or laptop to connect to your router’s Wi-Fi. If it only broadcasts 2.4GHz right now, that’s fine—just connect to it.

Step 2: Access the router login page

Open a browser and type the router’s login IP into the address bar—for example 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or whatever is printed on the label. Hit Enter (or “go” on mobile) and you should see the login screen.

Step 3: Enter the admin username and password

Remember, this is not your Wi-Fi password—it’s the router’s login credentials.

If you’ve forgotten them, check for a “Forgot password” option on the login page or reset the password using the instructions provided by the router manufacturer.

Step 4: Find the Wi-Fi settings

Once logged in, look for “Wireless Settings” or “Wi-Fi Settings.” There, you’ll see configuration options for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

Step 5: Enable 5G Network

Check the box for “Enable 5G Network” or toggle the switch on. Your router will now broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals.

Step 6: Set your 5G network name and password

Give the 5GHz network a unique name (SSID), such as Tenda_2025_5G. Create a strong password with at least 8 characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols. For security mode, always choose WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.

setup

Step 7: Save your changes and restart

Click “Save” or “Apply.” Some routers may restart automatically to apply the changes. Once it’s back online, you should see the 5GHz Wi-Fi in your device’s network list. Select it, enter the password, and enjoy the faster connection!

Troubleshooting & FAQs

1. Can’t log into the router?

This situation usually happens if you typed the IP address incorrectly or if your connection is unstable. Double-check the login IP—common mistakes include typing 192.168 l 1.1 instead of 192.168.1.1, or adding extra text like http //192.168.1.1 login. If needed, connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and try again.

2. My devices can’t connect to the 5G network—why?

The most likely reason is that the device doesn’t support 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is common with older phones, tablets, and laptops. If your device does support 5GHz, make sure you typed the Wi-Fi name and password correctly. Still not working? Delete the saved network on your device and reconnect—it often solves the problem.

3. 5G network enabled but no signal appears?

There are a few possibilities:

First, your device may not support 5GHz Wi-Fi, especially if it’s an older phone, tablet, or laptop.

Second, 5GHz has weaker range through walls. If the router is tucked in a corner or blocked by walls and furniture, the signal might not reach your device. Try moving closer to the router.

Finally, the router’s 5GHz channel might be incompatible with your device. You can try changing the channel in the router settings or test again near the router.
