If you’ve forgotten your router’s admin password, here are five practical ways to retrieve or reset it. One of these methods is sure to work for you.
Method 1: Check the Label on the Router
This is the simplest and most direct method.
Flip your router over and look for a sticker on the bottom. You’ll usually find details like:
- Login address (Login IP or URL)
- Username
- Password
Common default combinations include:
- Username: admin / Password: admin
- Username: admin / Password: (blank)
- Username: admin / Password: 123456
If you’ve never changed the password before, you can log in using the default credentials printed on the label.

Method 2: Use the “Forgot Password” Option
Many modern routers — such as those from Xiaomi, Huawei, TP-Link, and Tenda — include a “Forgot Password” or “Recover Password” option on the login page.
When you click it, you may be able to reset your password by:
- Verifying your linked phone number or email address;
- Scanning a QR code via the router’s mobile app;
- Logging in through your cloud account (e.g., TP-Link ID or Mi Account).
This method is simple, secure, and doesn’t require resetting your router.
If you see a “Forgot Password” button on your login screen, try this option first!

Method 3: Use the Router’s Mobile App
Most router brands now have their own management apps. For example:
- TP-Link → TP-LINK Tether
- Tenda → Tenda WiFi
- Xiaomi → Mi WiFi
- NETGEAR → Nighthawk

If your phone has been previously linked to your router, just open the app, log in, and go to “Management Settings” or “Advanced Settings” to view or reset the admin password.

Method 4: Check Saved Passwords in Your Browser
If you’ve logged in to your router before using your phone or computer, your browser might have saved the password automatically.
Here’s how to find it:
- Chrome: Settings → Autofill and Passwords → Google Password Manager
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Saved Logins
- Edge: Settings → Passwords
Other browsers like Safari also have similar “Password Manager” features.
Once you find the saved login for your router’s address, you can view the stored password there.

Method 5: Reset the Router to Factory Settings
If none of the above methods work, this is your last resort.
Locate the “Reset” button on the back of your router. Use a toothpick or pin to press and hold it for about 10 seconds, until the indicator lights flash — then release.
After the router restarts, the login password will revert to the default credentials printed on the label.
You can now log in using the default username and password again.
If your router doesn’t have a dedicated Reset button, check for a combined WPS/Reset button.
Some brands (like Tenda, FAST, and Mercury) use one button for both functions — pressing and holding the WPS button can also reset the router.
