The most painful thing is: Connected to WiFi already, but the web page can't be opened, the video has been stuck in the buffering state, or the game has been highly delayed . But clearly their router is new and broadband bandwidth is enough. Why is the WiFi signal still very poor? What causes the WiFi signal to be weak? How to enhance WiFi signal strength? Here we give solutions to some common problems as follows:
- The distance from the equipment to the router is the biggest factor affecting the WiFi signal strength, and it is also easy to solve. Because the strength of WiFi wireless signal will decay with the increase of distance, shortening the distance between WiFi router and equipment can be an effective way to solve it.
- Obstacles also have a great impact on the WiFi signal. When the WiFi signal passes through some walls or furniture, the signal will be greatly weakened. Because after the WiFi wireless signal is blocked by obstacles (such as wood, glass, metal products, etc.), the signal strength will be reflected, absorbed, or even shielded, thus affecting the use effect. Therefore, when installing the wireless router, try to avoid too many obstacles between the router and the Internet equipment.
When the router cannot be moved, there is another way to enhance the penetration of wireless signals: Change the frequency band of the router to 2.4G , because the signal penetration ability of this frequency band is relatively strong and the signal coverage area is relatively wide.
💡 Tips: most routers have two frequency bands, 2.4G and 5g. The signal in 5g band has faster speed and greater bandwidth, but the disadvantage is that the signal penetration performance is weak and the coverage area is small. Since WiFi is a wireless signal,it could easily be disturbed. The router should not be placed next to high-power equipment (refrigerators, microwave ovens, air conditioners and other equipment that will generate electromagnetic signals) or near metal objects, otherwise the wireless signal will be greatly affected.
When there are many 2.4G WiFi signals nearby, it will lead to channel congestion. It is similar to the traffic jam on the road. We should choose the road with fewer vehicles to avoid congestion. The method to test which channels are congested is also very simple. We can install a free WiFi scanning tool WiFiAnalyzer on the mobile phone to detect the idle channel, and then set the router to switch to the idle channel.
Some routers support power regulation. For example, some models of tp link have the options like"Signal strength"or"Transmission power", which can be used to enhance the transmission and reception of WiFi signals. And in the setting "Region"of Netgear routers , you can select "North America" or "Australia" to improve the WiFi signal power, because the signal security standard in these two regions is 200 MW, while that in most regions is 100 MW. After adjusting the power, it can effectively increase the coverage and penetration of WiFi signal.
The configuration and performance of each router are different, which also determines the number of equipments it can carry. General domestic medium and low-end routers are limited by CPU processing capacity, and it is difficult to work normally when too many equipments are connected at the same time. When the router connects multiple equipments (mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, etc.) at the same time, because the router needs to maintain communication with all connected equipments at any time, even if many connected equipments are not in use, it may exceed the CPU carrying range of the router, resulting in the decline of router performance and affecting the network quality of each equipment. It is recommended to disconnect infrequently used equipments from the network and check whether there is malicious network rubbing.
If there is no problem with the signal when the router is first purchased and the signal is poor after a certain period of service, if it has not been improved after restarting the router, it may be that the electronic components of the router itself appear aging phenomenon. It is recommended to buy a new router for a better experience.
