To change the SSID, you’ll need to access your router’s web-based admin interface. Before you begin, you need to complete the following preparations:
- Ensure the router is powered on, and your device (a computer or smartphone) is connected to its network—either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Know your router’s login IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
- Know the admin login username and password (typically “admin/admin” by default, unless changed).
Follow these steps to change the SSID:
1. Power on your wireless router and connect your computer or smartphone to its Wi-Fi signal, such as “TP-LINK-XXXX.”
2. Open a web browser and enter your router’s admin IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in the address bar, then press Enter.
3. On the login page that appears, enter the router’s admin username and password (usually printed on a label on the back of the device), and click “Login.”
4. After logging in, you’ll be taken to the router’s main dashboard, where you can navigate through different settings menus.
5. Locate the section labeled “Wireless Settings” or “Wi-Fi Settings.” Depending on your router model, it may be under “Settings” or “Advanced Settings” section.
6. If your router supports dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz), select the frequency band you want to configure.
7. In the “SSID” or “Network Name” field, enter your desired Wi-Fi name. A good Wi-Fi name should be clear, easy to remember, and not reveal personal information.
Good SSID examples:
“HappyHome_Wi-Fi” / “Room802_5G Network” / “IPSHU 2025”
SSID examples to avoid:
“James_Wi-Fi” / “123456789” / “StopStealingMyWi-Fi”
8. After entering your new SSID, click “Save” or “Apply.” The router may automatically restart.
9. If you also wish to update the Wi-Fi password, look for the “Password” or “Wireless Key” field. Enter your new password, and under the “Encryption Type” or “Security Mode” section, select WPA3 (recommended) or a WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. Click Save to apply the changes. Encrypting your Wi-Fi is a useful way to prevente unauthorized access.
10. After the router reboots, reconnect all your devices using the updated SSID and password.
