Sometimes, when we turn on our phone or computer to access the internet, we find that our home Wi-Fi is missing—not just a weak signal or connection failure, but completely absent from the Wi-Fi list. Don’t worry, this is actually a common issue. Today, we’ll discuss the most likely causes and guide you on how to restore your Wi-Fi connection.
Why Can't Your Device Detect Wi-Fi?
There are many reasons why your Wi-Fi may not appear, but the most common ones are:
1. The router has crashed.
Routers can freeze or have their Wi-Fi functionality disabled after long periods of operation. Just like people need rest when they’re exhausted, routers may also need a reboot.
2. The Wi-Fi name is hidden.
Some routers are set to hide the Wi-Fi name (SSID), making it invisible to devices. In this case, you’ll need to manually enter the Wi-Fi name and password to connect.
Solutions
1. Restart The Router
The simplest and most effective method is to unplug the router’s power, wait for 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. In many cases, the Wi-Fi signal will reappear.
2. Manually Add Wi-Fi Information to Connect
If rebooting the router doesn’t work, your Wi-Fi name may be hidden. In this case, you can manually add the Wi-Fi information on your phone or computer to connect.
Adding Wi-Fi on a Phone (iPhone/Android)
Open your phone’s settings and navigate to the Wi-Fi section.
Scroll to the bottom of the Wi-Fi list and find “Add Network” (the name may vary, such as “Other Networks” or “Manual Connection”).
Tap “Add Network” to enter the manual input interface.
In the “Network Name” or “SSID” field, enter your Wi-Fi name. You can check the Wi-Fi name on other devices that are already connected. Be mindful of capitalization.
Under “Security,” select “WPA2” or “WPA3” (these are the most common encryptions). If unsure, try “WPA/WPA2 PSK.”
In the “Password” field, enter your Wi-Fi password.
Finally, tap “Save” or “Join” and wait for your phone to connect. If the Wi-Fi information is correct, your phone will join to the Wi-Fi and display “Connected.”
Adding Wi-Fi on a Windows Computer
Click the “Network” icon in the bottom-right taskbar (Wi-Fi signal or globe icon).
Select “Manage Wi-Fi Connections” to open the Wi-Fi list.
Click “More Wi-Fi Settings.”
Click “Manage Known Networks” and then “Add a New Network.”
In the “Network Name” field, enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID).
Under “Security Type,” select “WPA2-Personal” or “WPA3-Personal” (if unsure, try “WPA2/WPA3-Personal”).
Enter the Wi-Fi password in the “Security Key” field.
Optionally, check “Connect automatically” and “Connect even if this network is not broadcasting.” Then, click “Save” and wait for Windows to connect.
Adding Wi-Fi on a Mac
Click the “Wi-Fi” icon at the top right of the screen and select “Open Network Preferences.”
From the left menu, select “Wi-Fi” and then click “Advanced.”
Under the “Wi-Fi” tab, click the “+” button at the bottom left.
In the “Network Name” field, enter your Wi-Fi name (SSID).
Under “Security,” select “WPA2 Personal” or “WPA3 Personal” (if unsure, try “WPA/WPA2 Personal”).
Enter the Wi-Fi password in the “Password” field.
Finally, click “OK,” then “Apply,” and wait for your Mac to connect to the Wi-Fi.
Emergency Tips
The methods above should help you resolve the issue of not being able to find your home Wi-Fi and get back online.
If you still can’t connect after manually adding the Wi-Fi, here are some emergency solutions:
1. Use Mobile Hotspot (requires sufficient data): Go to your phone’s “Settings,” find “Personal Hotspot,” enable it, and connect your computer or other devices.
2. Use a Wired Connection: If you have a laptop, directly connect it to the router’s LAN port using an Ethernet cable.
