Step 1: Make Sure Your Phone is Connected to the WiFi Network You Want to Modify
This step is crucial. If you’re connected to someone else’s network, you obviously won’t be able to change your own WiFi password, right? So, double - check your connection. Go to your phone’s settings, find the “WLAN” or “WiFi” option, and select the network you want to modify. Enter the current password if prompted to connect.
Step 2: Open Your Browser and Enter 192.168.1.1
On your phone’s home screen, open a browser like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or your phone’s default browser. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.1 exactly, then hit “Go” or “Enter.” This will take you to your router’s login page.
Note: If your router’s admin address isn’t 192.168.1.1, you won’t be able to access the login page. You’ll need to find your router’s actual admin IP address. (Click here to learn how to find your router’s admin IP address.)
Also, be careful not to mistype the IP address. Common mistakes include entering 192.1681.1, 192 l.168.1.1, or http//192.168.1.1.

Step 3: Enter the Router’s Admin Username and Password
On the login page, you’ll need to enter the admin username and password. There are two possible scenarios:
- If you’ve never changed the username and password: Most routers have a default username and password, which is often admin for both. If that doesn’t work, check the label on the back of your router or the user manual. These usually list the default admin IP, username, and password.
- If you’ve changed the password but forgot it: Look for a “Forgot Password” or “Password Recovery” option on the login page. If available, follow the prompts to reset your password. If not, you’ll need to reset your router by pressing the Reset button (hold it for a few seconds) to restore factory settings. Then, log in using the default credentials.
Step 4: Find the Wireless Settings and Change the WiFi Password
Once logged in, you’ll see your router’s management interface. The layout may vary depending on your router’s brand, but the general steps are similar. Look for the Wireless Settings or WiFi Settings option.
- Under “Wireless Settings,” you’ll see your current WiFi name (SSID) and password.
- In the password field, enter your new password (Pre - Shared Key). Pro tip: Make it strong by using a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. Write it down or save it in a password manager to avoid forgetting it.
- After making the change, click Save or Apply to ensure the new settings take effect.

Step 5: Reconnect to the WiFi
After changing the password, your phone will automatically disconnect from the WiFi (since the password no longer matches). Simply reconnect using the new password.
